In this column, Zach Brand reviews movies that recently hit the theaters. Up this week is Insidious 2.

The horrors experienced many years ago in the Lambert Residence, 1986, still plague the Lambert family today in this terrifying sequel to Leigh Whannell and James Wan’s first frightening blockbuster. In this second addition to the Lambert family’s story, they must once again battle remnants from the afterlife in order to keep their family together. The plot of Insidious 2 is a wonderfully written nail-biter with so many twists and turns that it makes it nearly impossible to predict what will happen next.

Many questions posed in the beginning, (even tied into the first film) are answered with such cleverness, it forces an “Oh!” reaction out of you every time. As far as casting and acting go, the original cast returns to add this second chapter. Patrick Wilson stole the screen, taking the place as one of the film’s most bone-chilling aspects. All camera and special effect work was phenomenal, with the right angle and lighting to make every second as equally scary as the last. The story line and event pattern mirrored the first movie almost completely, ending in the same frightened gasp that the first Insidious ended on. All of this adds up to the fact that if you were a fan of the first movie, you’ll definitely be a fan of the second.

Zach’s rating: Four stars, earned through the combination of many impressive factors.
